Preparation is the most reliable predictor of interview success. The candidates who consistently land offers are not necessarily the most talented — they are the most prepared. Here is how to prepare effectively for a Canadian job interview.

Research the Employer Thoroughly

Know their products or services, recent news, company culture, values, and competitors. Read their website, LinkedIn page, and any recent press releases. In the interview, weave this knowledge naturally into your answers to show genuine interest.

Understand the Role

Re-read the job posting. Identify the top four or five requirements. Prepare specific examples from your experience that demonstrate each one. If you cannot address a key requirement, think about adjacent experience you can connect to it.

Use the STAR Method

Most Canadian employers use behavioural interview questions: "Tell me about a time when..." Answer these with the STAR method: Situation (what was the context?), Task (what was your role?), Action (what did you specifically do?), Result (what was the outcome, ideally with numbers?).

Prepare Your Own Questions

Always have three to five thoughtful questions ready to ask the interviewer. This signals genuine interest and helps you assess whether the role is right for you. Ask about team dynamics, success metrics, or challenges the team is currently navigating.

Logistics and Presentation

After the Interview: Follow Up

Send a brief thank-you email within 24 hours. Reference something specific from the conversation to make it personal. Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role. This is a simple step most candidates skip — do not be one of them.
