LinkedIn is the dominant professional networking platform in Canada. Recruiters across every industry use it daily to find and vet candidates. A strong LinkedIn profile works for you around the clock — even when you are not actively job searching.
1. A Professional Photo Is Non-Negotiable
Profiles with photos get significantly more views. Use a current, professional headshot with a clean background. Smile. You do not need a studio shot — a well-lit photo with a plain background works perfectly.
2. Write a Headline That Speaks to Employers
Your headline is prime real estate. Do not waste it with just your job title. Include your specialty and value: "HR Business Partner | Talent Acquisition Specialist | Durham Region" or "Operations Manager | Supply Chain | 10+ Years in Manufacturing."
3. Use the About Section Strategically
Write in first person. Lead with what you do and who you do it for, then highlight your top accomplishments, and close with a call to action (how to reach you, what you are open to). Aim for 200 to 300 words. End with your contact email or a note that you are open to opportunities.
4. Include Canadian Location and Context
Set your location to your city and province. Canadian recruiters filter by location. If you are open to remote work, mention it explicitly in your About section or open-to-work settings.
5. Optimize Your Skills Section
Add up to 50 skills. Prioritize the top skills relevant to your field and get endorsements from colleagues. LinkedIn's algorithm uses your skills to surface your profile in recruiter searches.
6. Request Recommendations
Three to five strong recommendations from managers, colleagues, or clients are highly persuasive. Reach out to people you have worked closely with and offer to write a recommendation for them in return.
7. Turn On Open to Work
If you are job searching, use LinkedIn's "Open to Work" feature. You can choose to show it publicly (green banner on your photo) or only to recruiters. Recruiter-only visibility lets you signal availability without alerting your current employer.
8. Post and Engage Regularly
Even one or two posts per week about your industry increases your visibility significantly. Comment thoughtfully on posts from leaders in your field. Consistency matters more than volume.
