Legal Aid Ontario provides funded legal services to low-income Ontarians, but many people fall into the gap — earning too much to qualify, but not enough to afford a lawyer. If that is you, there are real options.
1. Duty Counsel
Duty Counsel lawyers are available at most Ontario courthouses on court days. They provide free, brief legal advice and can sometimes speak on your behalf at short hearings. Duty Counsel cannot represent you throughout a case, but they can help you understand what is happening on a particular court date. Arrive early — spots are limited and first-come, first-served.
2. Family Law Information Centres (FLIC)
Every Ontario family court has a Family Law Information Centre. FLIC staff can answer questions about procedure, help you find the right forms, and connect you with resources. They cannot give legal advice, but they are an excellent starting point.
3. Community Legal Clinics
Ontario has over 70 community legal clinics funded by Legal Aid Ontario. Many offer help with family law matters for people who do not qualify for full Legal Aid certificates. Find your nearest clinic at legalaid.on.ca.
4. Law School Legal Clinics
Law schools at Osgoode, U of T, Western, Queen's, Ottawa, and Windsor operate legal clinics staffed by law students under lawyer supervision. They often accept family law cases at no cost.
5. Limited Scope Retainers (Unbundled Legal Services)
Many Ontario family lawyers now offer limited scope retainers — you hire a lawyer for specific tasks only (reviewing an agreement, coaching you before a hearing, drafting one document) rather than full representation. This dramatically reduces cost while giving you professional guidance.
6. Legal Document Support Services
Services like One Stop Therapy Shop provide legal document preparation and organization support at sliding-scale fees. This is not legal advice or representation — but it helps you organize, format, and structure your documents correctly so you can present yourself effectively in court.
